65th Vignettes: Owen Cylke

I have very little nostalgia for the Old Yale. Wasn’t a great time for the place. Dominated by NY elite. No women (and all that represented). Few Jews (and all that…). A single Black? Susie. Conservative. An assumed perfect Lester Lanin kind is social milieu? Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed my time as a student at Yale. Thoroughly. But it was not the high point of my life. So little nostalgia. Reflection maybe. Memories, but no thinking Yale lost something after Griswold. Yale is a different place – all considered a better place – with plenty of space for further improvement.

What is the point? To exult those days? To recall with nostalgia those “those happily golden bygone days…”.

For me, if that is the theme, then what course did Yale set us out upon in 1960? What choices did we make coming out of the Yale experience? How did that work for us? Those that chose the market – society – back home – the world – marriage – celibacy –

But too grumpy. But my clarinet is in the closet, and my kids no interest in it.
