Alexander D. Whittemore, Jr.

OSTERVILLE – Mr. Alexander Douglas (Doug) Whittemore, Jr., of Marco Island, Florida and Osterville, Massachusetts, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 1, 2019 at the age of 81. He was born on July 11, 1938 to Alexander Douglas Whittemore and Lulu Henderson Whittemore in New Rochelle, New York.

Doug grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut where he attended Greenwich Country Day School, before graduating from The Choate School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Yale University in 1960, and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University Law School in 1963. For nearly 20 years he worked as a banker at Citicorp in New York, before moving to Boston where he was briefly a consultant with the Strategic Planning Institute in Cambridge. Doug and his wife Kimberly then moved to Florida where he became the President of security software developer Fischer-Innis Systems in Naples, Florida. He later became the Director of the Naples Medical Center until his retirement.

Doug was always happy on the water and loved running, and caring for, a variety of powerboats throughout his life along the New England and Gulf Coasts. He greatly respected the skill and craftsmanship of traditional boat builders, and his favorite boats during his lifetime were his Mackenzie Bass Boat, and later his Crosby Striper. He loved woodworking himself, and spent countless hours building things for use at home or on the boat, and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. He was also an avid golfer and tennis player, and an excellent shot who enjoyed shooting trap and skeet, sporting clays and upland bird hunting.

Undoubtedly his greatest love, other than his family, was music. Beginning at an early age, Doug became an excellent pianist who was blessed with a great musical ear and had a talent for creating his own improvisation around a melody after hearing it just once. He also enjoyed singing, and joined the Maieros while at Choate. He loved the music of the Episcopal Church, and later in life lent his voice to a number of church choirs including St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island, FL, Trinity by the Cove in Naples, FL, St. Peters Episcopal Church in Osterville, MA, and St. Andrews by the Sea in Hyannisport, MA.

Doug was a loving husband, father and grandfather in life, and will be dearly missed. He is survived by Kimberly Gonzales Whittemore, his wife of 36 years, their daughter Allison Victoria Whittemore, his son Alexander Douglas Whittemore III from his first marriage to Nena Thames Whittemore (dec.), daughter-in-law Emily Taylor Whittemore, and their children Nena Louise Whittemore and William Vaughan Whittemore.

There will be a private family interment this week in Cotuit, MA, and a memorial service for friends and family at St. Andrews by the Sea in Hyannisport, MA in the summer of 2020.
