Subject: Harry Olivar, Yale 1960
7/22/09
It is with great sadness that I pass the news of your classmate Harry Olivar’s death from pancreatic cancer Monday morning, July 20th. His good wife Madere called me to report Harry had passed peacefully after a lingering struggle at home with hospice care.
Harry and I became close friends over 25 years ago after he urged me to join the Board of Directors of the Yale Club of Southern California. We instituted a monthly luncheon at our downtown Los Angeles Jonathan Club for all Yale Alumni, and I have carried the host banner for the past several years after Harry grew weaker.
Harry Olivar was a tower of strength in many ways — as a great Yale football tackle in the glory years of Yale teams in the late ’50’s through the 60’s. He was indeed a Renaissance Man — as an attorney specializing in Trusts and Estates, chairing numerous committees at the Jonathan Club (Library, Meet the Author nights, etc.), and honoring Yale at reunions and conferences.
I hope you will give this sad news the proper attention to his classmates and teammates. I am sure Madere will be noticing the AYA office in New Haven.
Sincerely,
H. Terry Buchanan
Yale, 1952
