James Nicholas Lodwick

The Reverend James Lodwick passed away August 9 in South Bend, Indiana at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents Virginia and Edward, and leaves behind his sister Mary Ross, niece Kelly Wilson, cherished cousins and many friends from around the world.

Jim grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Yale University, University of Leuven in Belgium, and the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Following ordination to the priesthood in 1968, he served as Rector at St. Edward the Martyr in Spanish Harlem where he preached in Spanish, and then as Associate Minister at St. James on Madison Avenue in New York City.

He moved to South Bend to pursue his PhD at Notre Dame. There he also served as an Associate at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, as an Interim rector at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Fort Wayne, as an Interim rector at St. James Episcopal Church in Goshen, and as a Hispanic Missioner for the Diocese of Northern Indiana.

Upon his retirement, he divided his time between South Bend, his home in Guanajuato, Mexico, and Forest Echo Farm in Vermont, which is part of a land trust dedicated to environmental awareness and preservation.

Fluent in seven languages, Jim enjoyed language study and travel. He especially loved hiking, highlighted by pilgrimage treks of El Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Via Francigena through Tuscany, Italy, and a coast-to-coast walk across Scotland.

Jim was a man of great faith, an environmentalist, a champion for civil rights, a wonderful friend, a great story teller, and a gatherer of people. He shared our joys and sorrows, weddings and baptisms, and our life’s journeys. For all those privileged to know Jim, his presence will be forever felt.

The Service of Christian Burial will be held 3:00 pm, Sunday, August 27 at The Cathedral of St. James in South Bend, Indiana. Visitation will take place at the Cathedral for one hour prior. The service was also livestreamed on the Cathedral’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
