James Otis Moore III, 81, passed away the morning of April 11, 2019, in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Jim was born to Jane Bradley and James Moore II, esquire, in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1938. After graduating from Phillips Academy Andover, Jim received a B.S. in physics from Yale University in 1960. While at Yale, Jim served as the manager of the Yale Hockey Team. After college, he served four years as an officer in the Navy, three years of which were spent traveling around much of the globe on the USS Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Jim then went on to earn an MBA in finance from Stanford University.
While at Stanford, Jim met and later married Wendy Gross. After having three children they moved to Westport, Conn., where Jim had a successful career as a finance professional in New York City. While working in New York, Jim served on the board of the Correctional Association of New York, an organization dedicated to criminal justice reform.
Upon retirement, Jim moved to Hailey, Idaho, to fly-fish, hike and ski. While living in Idaho, Jim became involved with numerous charitable organizations. He was most proud of his volunteer work for the Hospice of the Wood River Valley and The Hunger Coalition. He was also a dedicated supporter of the Wood River Land Trust, St. Luke’s hospital and Mountain Humane. Jim had an extreme love for animals and always had several beloved pets in his life.
He is survived by his three children, Elizabeth Moore of Boca Raton, Fla., Patrick Moore of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Caitlin Moore of New York, N.Y.; son-in-law, Tony Gibbons; and grandchild, Emmett Gibbons. Jim is also survived by his sister, Betsy Greve of Venice Beach, Calif.; his brother, Luke Moore; sister-in-law, Pamela Ellis of Seattle, Wash.; and three nephews and two nieces and their children.
