Jonathan Arthur Weiss was born on May 1, 1939, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Paul and Victoria Weiss. He lived a life filled with love and adventure. He graduated from Loomis Prep School in 1956, Yale University in 1960, studied for a year at the University of Chicago Law School in 1961, and graduated from Yale Law School in 1963. As one of the founders of Legal Services, he worked at the Labor Department in Washington, D.C. Neighborhood Legal Services as a Managing Attorney, at MFY Legal Services as a Managing Attorney, at the Columbia Center on Social Welfare Policy and Law as a Senior Attorney, and as the Director of Legal Services for the Elderly in New York City. While Jonathan was serving at MFY Legal Services in 1967, an officer of the court asked him to represent young Iris E. Rodriguez rather than having Legal Aid assist in her case, due to the special needs of her case. After a discussion with Iris’s family and recognizing Jonathan as a senior and experienced attorney in that court, Judge Guerrero appointed Jonathan A. Weiss the legal guardian of Iris E. Rodriguez, making her his ward and giving him charge and custody. Jonathan was a steady and constant part of Iris E. Rodriguez’s life as he became a grandfather and great-grandfather over the years. Jonathan’s love for travel was matched only by his love of philosophy, reading, writing, classical music, and teaching, among other hobbies. After Jonathan retired from Legal Services for the Elderly, he continued teaching at Pace University Law School, writing and publishing his own work. He continued to travel and spend time with grandchildren, family, and friends as much as possible. Jonathan passed away suddenly at his home in New York City on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Victoria, and his sister, Judith Weiss. He is survived by his daughter, Iris E. Rodriguez; his grandchildren, Robert Ferrer, Jessica Ferrer-Stock, Alexandra Rosado, and Rigoberto Jimenez; his great-grandchildren, Krystal and Raphael; and his life partner, Virginia Kovel. Jonathan’s legacy of love, family, and devotion to community service will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
