Warren H. Cochrane

Greenville – Warren H. Cochrane, 81, passed away February 23, 2019, at his home after a long struggle with Parkinson’s. He was born January 23, 1938, in New Britain, CT, the son of Herbert C. and Thelma M. (Fairbanks) Cochrane.

Warren graduated from Avon Old Farms School in Avon, CT and Yale University, Class of 1960.  He taught sciences and coached sports at private schools in Pasadena, CA, Lebanon, NY and Webster, MA before settling in Greenville in 1966 to teach, coach, and raise a family. Warren retired from teaching in 1981 to attend Bonnie Prudden School for Physical Fitness and Myotherapy in Lenox MA, then returned to Greenville, created two businesses and resumed ski coaching.

Warren’s lifelong passion for fitness and health led him to establish Beyond A Century, a nutrition mail-order company, and open Moosehead Fitness Center in Greenville. Beyond A Century grew successful with the help of son, Erik, and his wife, Sarah, and continues to operate after 35 years in business.

In 1953, Warren began leading canoe trips every summer on the Allagash River with his father Herb. Allagash Canoe Trips began as a six-week teen boys adventure and evolved over the years to offer shorter trips to families and adults. Over nearly fifty years Warren helped introduce hundreds of people to canoe camping on rivers in Maine and Canada.  Third generation guide, Chip and his wife, Lani, now run the oldest continously operating canoe trip guide service in Maine, carrying on the family tradition.

Throughout his life Warren loved to share his vast knowledge and enthusiasm for physical training, anti-aging and performance nutrition, skiing, canoe paddling, poling, and whitewater racing, and growing healthy food. He has inspired generations through his teaching, coaching, guiding, competing, and advocating for individual liberty and free inquiry.

Warren is survived by his wife, Linda; three sons, Warren “Chip” Jr and wife, Lani, Tristan and wife, Amy, and Erik and wife, Sarah; stepson, Eli Ward and partner, Susan; sister Viviane; grandchildren, Orion, Lily, Chloe, Czari, Lola, Daisy, and Harlow; nephew, Art Geetersloh and wife Susan; niece, Kate Lee; former partners, Denise and Beverly and stepson and daughter David and Julie; and cousins, Gail and Mike. He was predeceased by his parents.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.  Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate reading comments that share a memory of Warren.  Messages of condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com
